This book is a great asset for any writer and what a useful tool! While I know the basics, this book can help you navigate through the confusion that can be bookkeeping. It covers everything from royalty payments to what to do when you have agent fees.

I would have never thought to deduct some of the business expenses I had when writing, had Brigitte Thompson not brought them to my attention. The lists and supporting information are invaluable! The web sites offered are also quite helpful and I love that there are tips from other writers.

Writers have a different set of things to consider when it comes to book keeping, and this book walks even the most math-challenged writer through the details with ease.

Ms. Thompson has a natural teaching ability that makes anyone reading feel she is siting across the table and teaching personally. She has anticipated any questions that may arise and addresses them efficiently.

I will never recommend any other book keeping book after having read this one-it is simply the best there is out there.

Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers by Brigitte Thompson finally came today. I tore open the packaging and devoured the book in one sitting. I could feel myself nodding, "Oh, this is what I'm supposed to be thinking about!" or "This is what I'm supposed to be doing!" I consider myself well-versed in freelance writing. I can't believe how lost I was without this! There are real-life questions answered, worksheets, easy to understand financial basics specifically written for the freelance writer.

The timing was perfect and now I need to get on the stick. This is practical stuff that made me understand that this part of my business is as crucial as my writing.

Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers is a wonderful book for those that are, or thinking of becoming freelance writers. This book covers getting started, recording income, business expenses, business use of your home, automobile deductions, entertainment and travel, employee versus subcontractor, business management, taxes and audits, blank forms, and resources for your writing business along with a glossary.

Bookkeeping Basics for Freelance Writers covers most of the income reporting and deduction question you may have about running a business out of your home, or even from an out of the home office. Brigitte has even covered the items needed in a business plan you will need in case you decide to apply for a business loan for your business.

The chapter with the forms contains samples of Monthly Income, Annual Income, Monthly Direct Expense, Annual Direct Expense, Inventory List, Indirect Monthly Expense, Indirect Annual Expense, IRS Adjusted Mileage Allowance, Actual Expense, Automobile Registration, Annual Summary, Entertainment Log, Travel Log, Profit and Loss Statement, Accounts Receivable Summary, Accounts payable Summary, and Balance Sheet.

Brigitte also explains the difference between the Cash, Accrual, and Hybrid accounting methods in Bookkeeping basics for Freelance Writers. Business types are also explained, the Sole Proprietorship, S-Corporation, or Partnership. While there are differences in various states, while Brigitte mentions the basics, you may need to visit an attorney or paralegal to find the laws for your individual state.
This book will teach you how you may legally reduce your income tax. Depending on the individual state, you may need to consult a tax professional. This book however, will clue you in to record keeping and more.

This reviewer recommends this book for more than just Freelance Writers. It is awarded a five start rating from this reviewer.

My suggestions for how to use this book are as follows...number one, beginning writers can use it as a research tool. It can help you get an idea of some of the work ahead of you as a writer where your finances are concerned. Number two, more experienced writers will probably get the most use out of the chapter on tax write offs. Number three, there is an entire chapter dedicated to blank forms for your convenience - make use of them.

I fancy myself a pretty smart gal, but the first time around even I stumbled across a couple areas that I had to read a couple times over to understadn fully. But on a whole Ms. Thompson does a lovely job of making the tedious and often complicated process of bookeeping seem simple in a "Ohhhh, so that's how you do it!" kind of way. As a budding freelancer, it's been added to my shelf of resources and filed under "read again".
